Stephen Donaldson – First Chronicles Of Thomas Covenant
Hey all,
Delighted to upload Stephen Donaldson’s First Chronicles Of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever. It originally took me years to find these files.
The readers are various, I believe they may originally have been read for a private charity for the Blind.
Personally, though Tolkien defined the genre, (and it’s an ill-served genre in the main since) Donalsdon is for me the best modern exponent. There are powerful themes of responsibility and culpability.
While the 1st Chronicles display some weakness in the writing, they were his first work, and a great achievement for that.
Thomas Covenant, a successful married writer, is diagnosed with leprosy. His wife leaves him and his community ostracises him. While trying to maintain sanity and life he has an encounter with a strange old man. Shortly after he is involved in an accident. On waking he finds himself in an unknown Land, where his health has been restored. But the Land is under assault from Lord Foul. And it is Foul who has summoned Covenant, seeking to force him to unleash the wild magic in his wedding ring, and destroy the world, setting Foul free.
But is the Land real or a flight from reality? How can Covenant, a leper, give himself over to dreams of power & health which could undermine his ability to survive when he returns home?
